My Best Summer Simple & Easy Protective Hairstyle to Do
I love an easy haircare routine! As ya know, my free time is tight, with it I unfortunately have a very sensitive scalp. Above all, summertime is when my scalp gets the driest and I need to keep it cool and moisturize. Additionally, the climate I live in doesn’t help my scalp issues! As a matter of fact, I’m sharing with you my ultimate hair hack- My summer protective hairstyle! Simple & Easy.
Simple summer protective hairstyle
I start my summer with a nice dusting off my dead ends. Basically, I trim less than 1 inch of hair. This gives me a nice start with even hair shafts and all the dead ends from the winter removed. Once, I dust my ends, I shampoo my hair with a light clarifying shampoo and ensure to always deep condition my hair.
During this time of the year, my hair does very well with me using my DIY hair Teas on a more consistent basis than my winter schedule. Because the atmosphere is much drier and temperatures are up, the drying of my hair is expedited. So, my scalp can take a lot more water during this time than the colder winter months where it does not like to be wet. It’s imperative that I manage a balance between protein and moisture, and not overdo it with the protein. As an overload of protein tends to cause breakage on my strands.
Prep-Wash Day
In case of time constraint, you can wash your hair the day before. In the past, I have done this and all I need is to rewet my hair slightly with water using a spritz bottle. As I stated above, I don’t like for my hair to be too damp for this style.
For my shampooing, I tend to use very mild shampoos. At least for me what I have been using, is baby shampoos and they have been working GREAT! For this style and season, I use AVEENO BABY CREAMY WASH. I do alternate my shampoo, but the main focus is for the shampoo to be gentle. As I suffer from very dry & sensitive scalp. It’s a struggle of mine, that I have yet not been able to find an absolute cure to it.
Once I shampoo my hair, I skip conditioner and go straight into deep conditioning. I leave my deep conditioner on for about 15-20 mins during my routine. At the present time, my favorite deep conditioner for the summertime is SKY ORGANICS TREATMENT MASK.
the prep of styling- simple & Easy steps
For this particular style unless I’m in a rush, I typically don’t like to work with soaking wet hair. So, I tie up my hair with a hair towel till it’s damp (not yet fully dried out) and then start the work. My protective style of choice for the summer is hair twists! All in all, I make 14 twists after every hair wash.
For the actual twists, I only use 2 leave in hair products! I know, I told you I like simple stuff. And this have given me exceptional results. I wear my twists just for a few hours and BAM release my curls! Hence, I do outside activities, to help with the drying time. On extreme hot days, it only takes my hair 30mins to completely dry!
My 2 products that I use are as follows: CAROL’S DAUGHTER MIMOSA HAIR HONEY– For shine. Next, I take the AUNT JACKIE’S QUENCH! MOISTURE INTENSIVE LEAVE-IN Conditioner and ensure all my strands are well drench with both products. I do tend to go a bit heavy handed for this style, as I noticed my curls do better when I use a bit more product.
Below are the steps I follow to create My Most favorite Summer protective hairstyle
Once I have drenched my hair with the 2 products above. Not too much where you have a ton of products dripping from your strands. Followed by the parting and twisting of the sections.
- Part my hair in the middle- Leaving me with 2 big chunks of hair to work with.
- I tie one part up and then section the other into 7 smaller parts- These parts are not perfect! (Sometimes I don’t even use a comb).
- Once I have my 7 parts sectioned out- I go into twisting.
- First, I use ‘Prayers Hand’ to ensure even distribution of the hair products and to make sure I’m not left with any ‘chunks’ of products.
- Lastly, I do a 2-strand twist tight to my scalp but not putting too much pressure in pulling or tugging.
- You can watch some YOUTUBE videos like I did-LOL- if this is your first time trying them out.
Rocking a Twist-Out
Once and for all, you can remove your twists once they are completely dry! Or even leave them in for a couple of days- depends on your preferences and laziness (LOL). Usually, I only take them out for special occasions. If I have nothing other than my normal jammed packed kids’ activities planned for the week, then ON they stay till the next wash day. This is my all-time summer favorite protective style, and it works with my curly hair and sensitive scalp.
